Original Bach® Flowers
1. What are Bach Flowers?
Each of Dr Bach’s 38 flowers is designed as a remedy for a specific emotional or mental condition. In addition, there is also a combination of 5 flowers which was specifically developed for difficult and challenging situations, and which is known as the “Rescue Remedy”.
2. Dr Bach’s philosophy
The Bach Flower Therapy draws upon the work of the celebrated researcher and bacteriologist Dr Edward Bach (1886–1936), who practiced as a physician in London. By intuitive means he discovered that the oscillating energy of specific flowers had a vitalising effect on the mental and emotional state of individuals. In accordance with the principle “treat the person, not the disease”, Bach dedicated the autumn of his life to the search for plant-based “energy substances” to alleviate emotional problems and the resulting physical complaints.
Through many years of trial and error he succeeded, using solar and boiling methods, in making use of the inherent energy of individual plants, which peaks while these are in blossom.
Using these two production processes, Bach created a therapeutic system of 38 floral essences which can be used to treat specific emotional disturbances such as fear, lack of emotion, fatigue, homesickness, shyness, irritability, despair, indecision etc.
3. How Bach Flowers work
Like other forms of natural remedies, the flowers exert their effect by treating the patient as an individual, and not the illness or its symptoms. They have a specific effect on the emotional state of the person in question. This also explains why two people with the same illness can use different flowers. One person might have resigned themselves to their illness, while the other responds with impatience. For this reason, each of particular case requires different flowers. Bach Flowers are not designed to be used to suppress negative attitudes, but instead to transform these into positive frames of mind. This promotes the inherent self-healing potential, by setting the body’s own forces free to concentrate on fighting the illness and the complaint.
To benefit from the effect of Bach Flowers, however, an individual does not have to be suffering from a physical illness. Many of us experience difficult phases or inexplicable fatigue, which can develop into a negative basic frame of mind. It is precisely during such phases that Bach Flowers can make an enormously valuable contribution, by restoring the inner equilibrium before physical symptoms appear.
